How to use the weighted grade calculator

Leave ungraded work out of the calculation. Include an actual zero only when your teacher counts that work as zero.
Weighted grade formula
Weighted grade = sum of (score percentage × weight percentage) ÷ sum of entered weights
When weights total 100%, this is the same as multiplying every score by its decimal weight and adding the results. For example, a score of 90% in a category worth 20% contributes 90 × 0.20 = 18 percentage points to the overall course grade.

The weights total 100%, so your weighted course grade is 18 + 24 + 42.5 = 84.5%.
Current weighted grade when work is unfinished
Suppose only homework and quizzes from the example have been graded. Their combined course weight is 50%, and they contribute 42 course percentage points.
Current weighted average = (90 × 20 + 80 × 30) ÷ 50 = 84%.
This means you have an 84% average for the included half of the course. It does not mean your final course grade is 42% or guarantee an 84% final result. The remaining 50% depends on the work still to be completed.
Avoid counting category weights twice
If several homework assignments together make up a category worth 20%, first calculate the homework category average using your course rules. Then enter that average once with a 20% weight. Use the Grade Calculator to combine points or find a simple average where appropriate.
Your official grade may depend on dropped assignments, missing work, grade caps, curves or rounding rules. The displayed result uses up to two decimal places; check your syllabus before interpreting it as an official grade.
Weighted Grade Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each percentage score by its percentage weight, add the products, then divide by the total entered weight. Scores of 80% and 90% with weights of 40% and 60% produce (80 × 40 + 90 × 60) ÷ 100 = 86%.
Do my weights have to add up to 100%?
Use 100% when all course categories are included. If you enter only graded work, a smaller total is allowed: the calculator normalises by that entered weight and labels the result as your current weighted grade. It also shows the course weight not included. Totals above 100% are rejected.
Should I enter individual assignments or category averages?
Follow your syllabus. If homework as a whole is worth 20%, enter the homework category average once with weight 20. Do not give each homework assignment the full 20% category weight. Enter individual assignments only when you know their individual shares of the course grade.
How do I turn assignment points into a percentage?
Divide points earned by points possible and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 50 is 90%. To combine several assignments within a points-based category, add their earned and possible points first. Our Grade Calculator can do this for you.
Are blank fields counted as zero?
No. Rows with both score and weight blank are ignored, even if a name is entered. A partially filled row must be completed. Enter a score of 0 only when that work should count as zero under your course rules. A completed row with 0% weight contributes nothing.
Can I use decimal weights or extra credit?
Yes. Decimal scores and weights are accepted, and score percentages above 100% are allowed for extra credit. The total course weight must still be at most 100%. The calculator does not apply an institution-specific grade cap or model extra-credit categories whose weights push the total above 100%.
Why is my weighted grade different from the simple average?
Weights give some scores more influence. Homework at 90% with 20% weight, quizzes at 80% with 30% weight and exams at 85% with 50% weight produce 84.5%. Their equally weighted average is 85%. Use the method your teacher specifies.
