How the final grade formula works
The formula treats your current grade as the average for all coursework apart from the final exam.
Required final exam grade = (Desired overall grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
Use the final weight as a decimal when applying the formula. A 30% exam weight becomes 0.30.
Worked example
Suppose your current grade is 85%, your target overall grade is 88% and the final exam counts for 30%.
(88 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 95%. You need 95% on your final to finish with 88% overall.
What if the required grade exceeds 100%?
Under a standard grading system without extra credit, this means the target cannot be reached. The calculator shows the highest overall grade possible if you score 100% on your final exam.
Before using your result
Check that your current grade represents all coursework outside the final exam and that you entered the correct final exam weight. Dropped scores, unfinished assignments, grading curves, extra credit and institutional rounding rules can all affect your official result. Refer to your course syllabus for the grading method your school uses.

What does final exam weight mean?
It is the share of your total course grade assigned to the final exam. If your final is worth 30%, your other coursework accounts for 70%.
Can I use this if I have unfinished assignments?
Yes, with an estimated grade for all non-final coursework. The result can change as the remaining assignments are graded.
What if I need over 100% on my final?
Without extra credit or a change to the course’s grading rules, that target is not achievable. The tool shows the maximum overall grade if you score 100% on the final.
Does the calculator round the grade I need?

Does this calculate GPA or letter grades?
