How to use the grade calculator

For a category-based course, enter each category average and its course weight. Include a zero only when an assignment should count as a zero under your teacher’s policy.

Choose the right grading method

The same scores can produce different averages when a course uses different grading rules.

Total points

Use this when every earned point has equal value across the assignments you include.

Grade = total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100

Weighted grade

Use this when assignments or categories have different percentage weights.

Grade = sum of (score × weight) ÷ sum of entered weights

Simple average

Use this when every entered percentage counts equally, regardless of its original point total.

Grade = sum of percentage scores ÷ number of scores

Grade calculation example

Suppose your class uses a total-points system and you have these three completed assignments:

Your current grade is (145 ÷ 170) × 100 = 85.29%. Larger assignments contribute more because they are worth more points.

For a weighted example, coursework at 80% with a 40% weight and an exam at 90% with a 60% weight give (80 × 0.40) + (90 × 0.60) = 86%.

What does your current grade mean?

The result reflects the scores you entered. Blank rows are ignored. When entered weights total less than 100%, the calculator shows the average of that completed portion and tells you how much course weight is missing.

This is an estimate based on your inputs. Your official result may also depend on dropped scores, category rules, missing work, rounding or other policies in your syllabus.

Grade Calculator FAQs

Can I use this for a college or high school class?

Yes, if you select the grading method used in your course and enter the correct scores and weights. The formulas work for many college and school classes, but your institution’s rules determine which assignments count and how the official grade is recorded.

Why is a points-based grade different from a simple average?

A points-based grade gives larger point totals more influence. For example, 90 out of 100 and 5 out of 10 combine to 95 out of 110, or 86.36%. Averaging the two percentages, 90% and 50%, gives 70%. Use the method specified in your syllabus.

Do assignment weights need to add up to 100%?

For a full course calculation, the included weights should total 100%. If only some work has been graded, enter its weights; the tool divides by the entered total to show your current average. A total above 100% is rejected. A 0% weight excludes a score from the weighted result.

Should I enter assignments that have not been graded?

Leave their score fields blank. Blank rows are ignored rather than counted as zero. Enter an actual 0 when your teacher’s policy says an assignment should count as a zero. The result includes only the work you enter.

Can the calculator include extra credit?

Yes. In Total points mode, points earned may exceed points possible. In Weighted grade and Simple average modes, a score may exceed 100%. A result above 100% is shown as entered; the tool does not apply a school-specific cap. Every points row still needs a possible-point total greater than zero.

Can I enter decimal grades and weights?

Yes. You can enter decimal scores, point totals and weights. The calculator keeps the available precision during the calculation and displays the percentage with up to two decimal places. Your school may use a different rounding rule.

Does my percentage automatically convert to a letter grade?

No universal letter-grade scale applies to every course. Compare the calculated percentage with the scale in your syllabus to find your letter grade. This page does not assign a letter grade or calculate GPA.

Can this tell me what I need on my final exam?

This page calculates the average of scores you enter. It can include a final exam score and its weight, but it does not solve for the exam score needed to reach a target grade. Use our Final Grade Calculator to find the exam score you need to reach your target grade.
