GPA Calculator

Calculate your semester GPA using course grades and credit hours on a standard 4.0 scale. You can also estimate your cumulative GPA using your previous GPA and completed credits.

Calculate your GPA

Add your courses, credit hours and letter grades. Your GPA is weighted by credit hours, not simply the number of courses.

Courses this semester

Uses a common 4.0 scale (A+ and A = 4.0; A− = 3.7; B+ = 3.3). Universities can use different grade-point values and GPA rules. Check your institution's grading policy.

How to use the GPA Calculator

  1. Enter your courses. Add each course you want included. Course names are optional.
  2. Enter credit hours and a letter grade. Use your official course credits and select a grade from the 4.0 scale. Add or remove rows as needed.
  3. Optional: calculate cumulative GPA. Tick the cumulative GPA option and enter your previous GPA and previously completed GPA credits.
  4. Calculate your GPA. Select Calculate GPA to see your semester GPA, total credit hours and quality points. If you entered previous results, you will also see an estimated cumulative GPA.

Use the Load an example button to see how it works. Completely blank rows are ignored; a partially completed row must have both credit hours and a letter grade. Failed courses marked F count as zero grade points if your institution includes them in GPA.

GPA formula and calculation

Semester GPA formula

Semester GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total GPA credit hours

Quality points for a course = Grade point value × Course credit hours

For example, a 3-credit course with an A (4.0 points) contributes 3 × 4.0 = 12 quality points. Repeat this for each course, add the quality points together, then divide by the total GPA credit hours. Higher-credit courses have more influence on your result.

Cumulative GPA formula

Estimated cumulative GPA = (Previous GPA × Previous GPA credits + This semester’s quality points) ÷ (Previous GPA credits + This semester’s GPA credits)

Example: if your previous GPA is 3.20 over 30 GPA credits, and this semester earns 29.2 quality points across 9 credits, your estimated cumulative GPA is (3.20 × 30 + 29.2) ÷ (30 + 9) ≈ 3.21. Your school’s official GPA may differ if it uses another grade scale, repeats courses, excludes pass/fail classes or rounds differently.

GPA example: three courses

Suppose you take the following courses on the 4.0 scale used in this calculator:

CourseCreditsGradeGrade pointsQuality points
Biology3A4.012.0
Mathematics4B+3.313.2
History2C2.04.0
Total9——29.2

Semester GPA = 29.2 ÷ 9 = 3.24 (displayed to two decimal places). The mathematics course contributes more because it carries four credits.

Letter grades and GPA point values

The default scale used by this calculator is shown below. It is a common example, not a universal grading rule. In particular, some universities use 3.33 instead of 3.30 for B+, give A+ more than 4.0, or omit certain plus/minus grades.

Letter gradeGrade pointsLetter gradeGrade points
A+4.0A4.0
A−3.7B+3.3
B3.0B−2.7
C+2.3C2.0
C−1.7D+1.3
D1.0D−0.7
F0.0——

For official use, check your university’s academic regulations. Pass/fail, withdrawn or incomplete courses are not included as selectable grades here because their treatment varies by institution.

GPA Calculator FAQs

GPA stands for grade point average. Multiply the grade-point value of each course by its GPA credit hours, add those quality points, then divide by the total GPA credit hours. This page uses a common 4.0 scale.

Credit hours determine how much weight each course carries. An A in a 4-credit course contributes 16 quality points, while an A in a 2-credit course contributes 8. Your GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple average of letter grades.

Semester GPA uses only the courses taken in the current semester. Cumulative GPA combines your prior GPA and completed GPA credits with the new semester’s results. Select the cumulative option in the tool to estimate both.

A+ and A both count as 4.0. An A− counts as 3.7, B+ as 3.3 and B as 3.0. Your university may use a different scale, so compare these values with your institution’s official grading policy.

This tool weights letter grades by course credit hours. If you need to combine homework, exams and assignments that have different percentage weights within one course, use our Weighted Grade Calculator instead.

In this calculator, F has a grade-point value of 0 and its credit hours are included in the GPA calculation. Some schools have repeat or grade-replacement policies that can change official cumulative GPA results.

No. Those grades often have institution-specific rules and may not count towards GPA credit hours. Enter only courses with the supported letter grades that count towards your GPA according to your school’s policy.

Not reliably without your school’s grade conversion table. A percentage may map to different letter grades at different institutions. Convert your course percentage to its official letter grade first, then enter the grade and credit hours here.

Tick “Also calculate cumulative GPA”, enter your previous cumulative GPA and previously completed GPA credits, then enter your current semester’s courses. The calculator combines the previous quality points and new semester quality points and divides by the combined credits.

The credit-weighted formula is correct for the 4.0 grade-point scale displayed on this page. Official results can differ if your institution uses different grade values, special rounding, excluded courses, transfer-credit rules or course-repeat policies. Your transcript and institution’s rules take priority.
