ASSIGNMENT SCORE CHECK

Assignment Grade Calculator

Calculate your assignment percentage and letter grade from points earned and points possible. You can also estimate how a weighted assignment may affect your current course grade.

Calculate your assignment grade

Enter the points you earned and the total points possible. Add the optional course fields if you want to estimate the assignment's effect on your current grade.

The number of points you received on the assignment.

The maximum points available for the assignment.

Weighted course impact (optional)

Your current average before this assignment is included.

The percentage of the course already represented by your current grade.

The percentage of the total course grade assigned to this assignment.

Letter grades use a common A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60 scale. Your school may use different cutoffs or weighting rules.

How to use the Assignment Grade Calculator

  1. Enter points earned: type the score you received on the assignment.
  2. Enter points possible: add the maximum points the assignment was worth.
  3. Calculate: see your percentage and a common letter-grade result.
  4. Optional course impact: add your current course grade, completed course weight and the assignment weight to estimate the updated grade for the work counted so far.

If your course uses category weights rather than a direct assignment weight, use the Weighted Grade Calculator.

How the assignment grade formula works

The basic calculation converts the points you earned into a percentage of the total points available.

Assignment grade = (Points earned ÷ Points possible) × 100

For example, earning 42 points out of 50 gives an assignment grade of 84%.

Worked example

Suppose you score 68 points on an assignment worth 80 points.

68 ÷ 80 × 100 = 85%. On a common grading scale, that is a B.

How the weighted assignment estimate works

When you enter all three optional fields, the calculator combines your current course grade and the new assignment according to their weights.

Estimated grade = (Current grade × Completed weight + Assignment grade × Assignment weight) ÷ (Completed weight + Assignment weight)

Before using your result

Your official grade depends on the rules in your syllabus. Some schools use different letter-grade cutoffs, category weights, dropped scores, curves, extra credit or special rounding rules. For university and college courses, use the exact points and weights provided by your instructor.

Assignment Grade Calculator FAQs

Divide the points earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. For example, 18 out of 20 equals 90%.

Yes. If the assignment has a direct percentage weight in your course, enter the three optional course-impact fields to estimate the updated grade.

Yes. The points-to-percentage calculation works for university and college assignments as long as the points and weights match your course syllabus.

The calculator allows points earned to be greater than points possible, so an assignment score above 100% can be displayed.

This calculator focuses on one assignment and its possible course impact. The Grade Calculator combines multiple assignments or categories to calculate an overall course grade.

Use the Weighted Grade Calculator when an assignment belongs to a category such as Homework, Labs or Exams and the category itself has a weight.
