Quarter Grade Calculator

Combine your Q1–Q4 grades, include an optional final exam, and find the average you need in the quarters ahead. Use the weights from your school’s grading policy.

Calculate your quarter average

Enter completed quarter grades as percentages. Leave future grades blank; enter 0 only for a real zero.

Quarter 1
Quarter 2
Quarter 3
Quarter 4

Weights must total 100%. Enabling the exam starts with 20% per quarter and 20% for the exam. Change these to match your school. Set an unused period’s weight to 0.

How to use the quarter grade calculator

  1. Enter your quarter grades. Add the percentage earned in Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4. Leave any ungraded quarter empty.
  2. Check the weights. The starting setting gives each quarter 25% of the year grade. You can edit every weight.
  3. Include an exam if needed. Turn on the final exam and enter its score when available. Adjust all weights so they add up to 100%.
  4. Set a target. Enter the overall percentage you want to find the weighted average needed across unfinished periods.
  5. Calculate. Read your current average or completed overall grade and the share of the year already graded.

The calculator accepts decimal percentages from 0 to 100. Your school’s rules determine whether extra credit, dropped grades or rounding change the official result.

Quarter grade formula

For four equally weighted quarters, add the percentages and divide by four:

Overall grade = (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4) ÷ 4

Custom quarter weights and a final exam

Overall grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ 100

Use percentage weights, such as 20 for 20%. Include the exam in the sum only when your school counts it separately. Do not add the same exam twice if it is already part of a quarter grade.

When some quarters are unfinished

Current average = Σ(completed grade × weight) ÷ completed weight

This averages only completed work. A blank score is ungraded; a score of zero is graded and counts. The current average is not a prediction of your final year grade.

Average needed to reach your target

Required remaining average = (target × 100 − Σ(completed grade × weight)) ÷ remaining weight

The answer is a weighted average across all unfinished periods. Different combinations of future grades can achieve it. A result above 100% is not achievable within this calculator’s 0–100% scale.

Worked example: four quarters and a final exam

Suppose each quarter and the final exam count for 20%:

PeriodGradeWeightContribution
Q180%20%16 points
Q285%20%17 points
Q390%20%18 points
Q495%20%19 points
Final exam90%20%18 points

Overall grade: 16 + 17 + 18 + 19 + 18 = 88%.

Without an exam, the same four quarter grades at 25% each average 87.5%. If only Q1 (80%) and Q2 (85%) are complete, your current average is 82.5%. To finish at 90%, Q3 and Q4 must average 97.5% with equal remaining weights.

Quarter grades, semester grades and GPA

This tool combines marking-period percentages within one course. To calculate a quarter’s grade from homework, quizzes and tests, use the Weighted Grade Calculator. To average courses using credit hours, use the Semester Grade Calculator.

A percentage average is not a GPA. For letter grades and course credits, use the GPA Calculator. For a single remaining exam, the Final Grade Calculator can work out the score you need.

Quarter Grade Calculator FAQs

Do all four quarters have the same weight?

Not necessarily. Equal 25% weights are a starting example. Enter the actual weights from your school or syllabus, including any separate exam weight.

Can I calculate my grade before Q4 is finished?

Yes. Leave unfinished grades blank and keep their planned weights. The result shows your average for completed periods and how much of the total grade is still outstanding.

Does a blank grade count as zero?

No. Blank grades are treated as unfinished. Enter 0 only when the period has an actual zero that should count.

Can I use two quarters instead of four?

Yes. Set unused quarter weights to 0 and give the remaining periods weights that total 100%, including the exam if enabled.

Why must the weights add up to 100%?

The target calculation needs the whole grading plan, including future periods. A 100% total lets the tool distinguish your current average from the contribution already earned toward the final grade.

What if the required average is higher than 100%?

The target cannot be reached with scores capped at 100% under the entered plan. Check your inputs or choose another target. Extra-credit arrangements must be confirmed with your teacher.

Will my school round the grade the same way?

The tool displays results to two decimal places and keeps full precision during calculation. Your school may apply a different rounding rule or letter-grade scale.
