Estimate your AP Biology composite score

Use the current AP Biology structure: 60 multiple-choice questions worth 50% and six free-response questions worth 50%.

60 questions · 50% of exam score

Long-response question · 9 points

This calculator is a practice estimate. It treats all free-response rubric points proportionally within the 50% FRQ section and does not guarantee an official AP score of 1–5.

AP Biology exam format for 2027

The AP Biology exam is 3 hours long. Section I has 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes and counts for 50% of the exam score. Section II has 6 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes and also counts for 50%.

The free-response section contains 2 long questions worth 9 points each and 4 short questions worth 4 points each. The 2027 AP Biology exam is hybrid digital: students complete multiple-choice questions and view free-response prompts in Bluebook, then handwrite free-response answers in paper booklets.

How the AP Bio grade calculator works

The calculator converts your multiple-choice result into a percentage and applies the 50% MCQ weight. It then adds the six free-response rubric scores, converts the total out of 34 points into a practice percentage and applies the 50% FRQ weight.

Composite = (MCQ % × 0.50) + (FRQ % × 0.50)

This is a transparent practice estimate. Official AP 1–5 scores are determined through College Board scoring processes rather than one permanent public percentage cutoff.

AP Biology free-response questions

The two long free-response questions focus on interpreting and evaluating experimental results, including one question with graphing. The four short questions assess scientific investigation, conceptual analysis, analysis of a model or visual representation, and data analysis.

Long questions are worth 9 points each, while short questions are worth 4 points each.
