Free-response rubric score

This is a practice estimate. Official AP 1–5 score cut points are not a fixed public percentage chart and can vary by exam administration.

AP English Language exam format

The AP English Language and Composition exam is fully digital in Bluebook. Section I has 45 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour and counts for 45% of the exam score. Section II has 3 free-response questions in 2 hours 15 minutes, including a 15-minute reading period, and counts for 55%.

The free-response prompts are a synthesis essay, a rhetorical analysis essay and an argument essay.

How the AP Lang grade calculator works

The calculator converts your multiple-choice result into a percentage and applies the 45% section weight. It then adds the three essay rubric scores, converts the total out of 18 into a percentage and applies the 55% free-response weight.

Composite = (MCQ % × 0.45) + (FRQ % × 0.55)

This produces a practice composite percentage rather than an official AP 1–5 result.

AP Lang free-response scoring

Each of the three AP English Language essays is scored on a 6-point analytic rubric. The rubric awards up to 1 point for the thesis, up to 4 points for evidence and commentary, and up to 1 point for sophistication.

Because all three essays use a 6-point rubric, this calculator combines them as 18 total practice FRQ points before applying the 55% section weight.
