What Grade Was I In Year Calculator

Estimate which U.S. school grade you were in during a past school year using your date of birth and a typical K–12 age progression.

Find what grade you were in during a school year

Enter your date of birth and the starting year of the school year. The estimate uses your age on September 1 and a typical U.S. K–12 progression.

Use your actual birth date for a better estimate around school-entry cutoffs.

For the 2022–2023 school year, enter 2022.

Most estimates use age 5. Choose age 6 if that better matches your school history.

This is an estimate, not an official school record. Entry cutoffs, delayed entry, grade retention, grade skipping and local rules can change the result.

How to use the what grade was I in year calculator

  1. Enter your date of birth. A full birth date gives a better estimate than birth year alone because school-entry cutoffs can affect placement.
  2. Enter the school-year starting year. For 2018–2019, enter 2018.
  3. Choose the kindergarten starting age. Age 5 is the standard estimate. Choose age 6 if that matches your school history better.
  4. Select Find my grade. The tool estimates your grade and shows the age used for the calculation.

Why the result is an estimate

U.S. school grade placement is not determined by age alone. States and school districts may use different kindergarten cutoff dates, and individual students may start school later, repeat a grade or skip a grade. This calculator uses September 1 as a simple reference date, so it is useful for a quick estimate but should not replace school records.

If you know that you started kindergarten at age 6 instead of age 5, change the setting in the calculator to better match your history.
