How to use the semester grade calculator

  1. Choose a method. Select Courses & credit hours to calculate a semester-wide average, or choose One course: assignments & exams for a weighted grade within a single class.
  2. Enter your grades. Add the percentage and credit hours for each course. For one course, enter each assessment percentage and the weight specified in your syllabus.
  3. Calculate your result. Select Calculate to view your average and a breakdown. Add more rows, load a sample example, or use Reset to start again.

Course names and assessment names are optional. You can enter decimal grades and credit hours. Leave unused rows completely blank or remove them; partially completed rows trigger a clear warning.

Semester grade formulas

Semester average using credit hours

Semester average (%) = Sum of (course percentage × course credit hours) ÷ Total credit hours

Example: Biology is 80% (3 credits), Mathematics is 90% (4 credits), and History is 88% (2 credits). The semester average is (80 × 3 + 90 × 4 + 88 × 2) ÷ 9 = 86.22%, rounded to two decimal places. This is a percentage average, not your semester GPA.

One course using assignment and exam weights

Weighted course grade (%) = Sum of (assessment percentage × assessment weight) ÷ Total weight entered, where weight is entered as a percentage.

Example: assignments at 85% with 20% weight, midterm at 90% with 30% weight, and final exam at 80% with 50% weight yield (85 × 20 + 90 × 30 + 80 × 50) ÷ 100 = 84%.

If the entered weights total less than 100%, the calculator shows a current average normalised across the entered assessments. It also shows how many percentage points those assessments contribute to the full course grade.

Worked example: three courses in one semester

Courses with higher credit hours have more influence on a credit-weighted semester percentage. Consider this example:

776 ÷ 9 = 86.22% (rounded). Mathematics contributes more than Biology because it carries four rather than three credit hours.

When a semester percentage is different from GPA

A semester percentage averages numerical course marks. Semester GPA converts each course’s official letter grade to grade points and then normally weights those grade points by credit hours. Since grade-point scales and conversions differ by institution, you cannot assume that an 86.22% semester average corresponds to a particular GPA.

It estimates your semester percentage average using the course grades and credit hours you enter. It can also calculate a weighted grade within one course using assessment scores and their weights. It does not convert percentages into official GPA points.

Multiply each course percentage by its credit hours, add those products, then divide by the total credit hours. For example, 80% in a 3-credit course and 90% in a 4-credit course give (80 × 3 + 90 × 4) ÷ 7 = 85.71%.

When every course carries the same number of credits, the credit-weighted semester percentage equals the simple average of your course percentages. If credit hours differ, entering the correct values matters.

The calculator shows a warning instead of returning a misleading result. Check your syllabus and correct the entered assessment weights so they do not exceed 100%.

Yes. Decimal percentages and credit hours are accepted, and a 0% grade is valid. Each included course must have more than zero credit hours; each included assessment must have a weight greater than zero. Completely blank rows are ignored.

Yes. Enter possible future scores and their planned weights to compare outcomes. When using assessment mode, make sure the weights match your syllabus. The result is an estimate based on the numbers entered, not an official transcript calculation.

Not automatically. It accepts numerical percentages from 0% to 100% and does not apply pass/fail exclusions, grade caps, extra-credit policies or special transcript rounding. Follow your school’s grading policy and use the official course results where available.
